The 95th Annual Academy Awards are just over a month away. Controversy was made just a couple of weeks ago when the nominations for the big night were announced, and it is not expected to stop there as many categories are still ver much up in the air and may go down right to the wire.
Within this article, I will be providing my opinion on all categories in regards to who I think will win each award, and who I personally think should win the award. For "above-the-line" categories, I will be providing a small explanation to each decision made.
Let's get right into it.
Best Picture
Who Will Win? - Everything Everywhere All At Once
Who Should Win? - Everything Everywhere All At Once
There is no debate that this film has took the cinema-going world by storm over the last 12 months or so. It is loved all around the world, and the recent re-release to cinemas certainly supports that.
The film itself has picked up 10 nominations across 7 categories, including 4 acting nominations for it's all-star cast. Originally, the movie began as an unlikely outsider to receive much love from the Academy, but now it certainly runs the show and is expected to pick up multiple awards on the night.
Best Director
Who Will Win? - Steven Spielberg
Who Should Win? - Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert
Spielberg seems to be the number 1 go to choice for winning best director this year. After all, "The Fabelmans" is his own personal biopic to his life and is essentially a love letter to cinema, so why wouldn't the Academy love it?
I personally would like to see newcomers to the movie world, The Daniels, pick up the award. Their movie will arguably win best picture, and it would be nice to see the duo pick up the award against the likes of Spielberg.
Best Actor In A Leading Role
Who Will Win? - Colin Farrell
Who Should Win? - Colin Farrell
Colin Farrell has been a Hollywood heavy-hitter across multiple decades now, but had to wait until 2023 to gain some love from fellow Academy voters. And this could finally be his year. The Banshees Of Insherin received three other acting nominations this year, so it is fair to say that the voters liked the performances within the movie.
Could this finally be Farrell's time to shine?
Best Actress In A Leading Role
Who Will Win? - Cate Blanchett
Who Should Win? - Michelle Yeoh
It seems very likely that at the time of writing, Cate Blanchett will be picking up her third Oscar win. The fact that the favourite having multiple Oscar wins in the past can sometimes sway voters away from voting for them, but that doesn't always prove to be the case, and the fact that Blanchett has received various accolades for her performance in Tar up to now, is proving a good shout.
Michelle Yeoh is one of the 4 actors who are nominated for Everything Everywhere All At Once, and she isn't completely out of the running. I personally would like to see Yeoh take home the award for her first Oscar nomination, but hopefully not her last.
Best Actress In A Supporting Role
Who Will Win? - Angela Bassett
Who Should Win? - Stephanie Hsu
Angela Bassett is a mammoth within the film-making industry and it would come as no surprise that Oscar voters would like to award her career with an Oscar of her own. However, they may be reluctant to do so given the film she was nominated for is in fact a Marvel movie. A genre of film that the Academy haven't been to fond of in the past.
Stephanie Hsu gives a powerhouse performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once and is certainly worthy of an Oscar. Although Bassett is also worthy and gave a great performance, it would be nice to see Hsu gain the highest recognition available for her work in this film.
Best Actor In A Supporting Role
Who Will Win? - Ke Huy Quan
Who Should Win? - Ke Huy Quan
There seems to be a certain trend here doesn't there? But rightly so.
Ke Huy Quan has not only won the hearts of the people with his press tour for Everything Everywhere All At Once, but has also won the hearts of Academy voters, and this is proven through the form of his first Oscar nomination.
His inspiring return to acting through the form of this film has certainly grabbed people's attention, and this could bare well in his favour when it comes to Oscar night.
Best Original Screenplay
Who Will Win? - The Fabelmans
Who Should Win? - Everything Everywhere All At Once
I expect Spielberg (amongst others) to take home the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay on Oscar night. After all, it is a biopic to the legendary film director's life and has inspired many young people to break into the film industry. Seeing as though I expect The Daniels to take home the accolades for directing, I don't see them having much more success within this category.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Who Will Win? - All Quiet On The Western Front
Who Should Win? - Top Gun: Maverick
All Quiet On The Western Front holds this years title for most nominations across all films watched by voters, and it will be picking up a lot of success on the night across technical categories. It could very well pick up success in the screenplay category also.
Maybe it is the Top Gun fan in me, but this film has done so well to come this far, especially since it was released almost 9 months ago. If I want Maverick to pick up any award on the night, it is this one.
