Golden Globes Introduce Two New Categories To It's Ceremony

With the Hollywood Foreign Press Association era phasing itself out slowly but surely, the Golden Globes have recently announced that they will be integrating two brand new categories which we will see feature at next year's ceremony.

The two new categories being:

  • Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures

  • Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television

The Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures awards category is designed to nominate and award 8 of the "most acclaimed, highest-earning and/or most viewed films that have garnered extensive global audience".

Rules outlined by the organisation at a recent press release state that eligible films must have generated over $150 million globally, with at least $100 million of that haul being generated within the United States.

As well as this, the film must "obtain commensurate digital streaming viewership recognized by trusted industry sources". In the event that a picture is nominated for this category, it will still also be eligible for recognition amongst other categories.

The new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award is more than just rewarding the year's top earning and most viewed motion pictures... These films have typically not been recognized among industry awards, but they should be. - Tim Gray, Executive Vice President of the Golden Globes.

Whereas the Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television category is designed to nominate and award six "traditional stand-up comedy performances of at least 30 minutes" that first aired in the United States.

The rules, as stated by the organisation, clearly state that if said performance is part of a larger series or TV films, it will not be eligible for this category.
