The Holdover's Trailer Teases A Throwback To 90's Comedy Cinema

The trailer for the next chapter in Alexander Payne's filmography catalogue, that would see him finally return to the Director's chair for the first time in 6 years has finally been released, and it has fans excited.

From first look, The Holdover's previews a story about a group of college students that have no family to turn to over the Christmas period.

Following this, the students are forced to turn to their "by-the-book" college professor and the head chef of the school for company as they see through the seasonal festivities.

Paul Giamatti stars as the strict and disciplined college professor, who has no choice but to take the group of students under his wing for the Christmas holidays, despite his strong wishes against it.

Although Giamatti rarely fails to deliver, regardless of the size of his role, this could be the biggest opportunity for the Billions actor to gain some recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Which, much to fan's surprise, would be the first time.

The trailer starts off by proposing a very light and comedic tone that sets audiences up for nothing more than a light-hearted comedy.

But once the flow of the trailer takes a more serious tone, it's clear to see that The Holdover's has a much deeper purpose than the intention to create laughter amongst audiences.

Giamatti is set to star alongside Dominic Sessa, who makes his big screen debut through the form of The Holdover's.

The 33 year-old actor is tasked with the opportunity of playing college student, Angus, who has no family to turn to throughout the holidays, hence the birth of his relationship with his college professor.

As briefly already mentioned, The Holdover's is Alexander Payne's long-awaited return to the director's chair for the first time since 2017, where we saw him direct Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig in "Downsizing".

Despite it's unique concept, Downsizing received a smothering of negative reviews throughout it's theatrical run back in 2017. So, it goes without saying that Payne will be looking to return to hot form with his work on The Holdover's.

The trailer for this movie has no intention of hiding the fact that it is a very clear tip-of-the-hat to the comedies that we witnessed gain huge followings back in the early 90's.

All the way from the sound mixing to the quick, snappy editing, there are various aspects to the trailer that certainly pay homage to iconic films such as Groundhog Day and The Big Lebowski.

Although The Holdover's isn't set for cinematic release until early 2024, you can now view the trailer via the following link:
