New Poor Things Trailer Sets Up A Twisted Frankenstein Tale
Just over a month ago, we were provided with the first insight into Yorgos Lanthimos’ next directorial feature “Poor Things”. There wasn’t much to infer from the teaser trailer – especially given the fact it was only around 30 seconds long.
But due to the recent trailer drop (this time 83 seconds long), we now have a much better idea as to what audiences will be getting themselves into when they purchase themselves a ticket for this highly anticipated movie.
The first word that pops to mind after seeing this trailer is unique. I struggle to recall a time that we have seen a trailer that carries the same themes and overall vibe as this one. But then again, if Lanthimos’ last three films are anything to go by, why wouldn’t we expect the unexpected?
Poor Things stars Emma Stone as Belle Baxter, a young woman who has been brought back from the dead by Dr Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), but with her brain replaced with that of an infant’s.
I personally aren’t too familiar with the storyline behind Poor Things, and despite the lengthened trailer, this still doesn’t help. It would take good knowledge of the book to have any sense of idea as to what happens in the Poor Things story.
One thing I can commentate on is the stunning cinematography that we are treated to throughout the entirety of the trailer. There is a wide variety of colourful images and shots that are a real treat to the eye. This seems to be like something Lanthimos is yet to attempt throughout his filmography – until now.
The film also stars Mark Ruffalo and Ramy Youssef who (from initial impression), are set to perform as the two opposing love interests to Belle Baxter. And although we don’t get to see her in either of the trailers, Margaret Qualley is also credited in this film as “Felicity”.
The pace of this trailer is also a force not to be reckoned with. The editors behind the trailer leave audiences with no moment to catch their breathes or digest the spectacle that is placed before them. I genuinely believe there isn’t a shot throughout the trailer that lasts longer than 3/4 seconds.
