Just last week, Warner Brothers released the official trailer for the highly anticipated sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 masterpiece “Dune”, through the form of “Dune: Part 2”.
Following the outstanding financial success of Dune back in 2021, it didn’t take long for Warner Brothers to announce that the sequel would in fact be happening. And that it would be happening a lot sooner than we might think.
Films like Dune tend to take a very long time to produce. High-end budget movies that are smothered with digital and practical effects don’t tend to be a walk in the park to produce. But with a turnaround of just over 2 years, audiences have no right to complain.
Although it wasn’t officially announced at the time, Dune very much sets itself up to be followed by a sequel. Paul Atreides’ storyline wasn’t even close to being wrapped up, and after 2 and a half hours of audiences asking: “Where is Zendaya?”, Villeneuve wasn’t about to have one if his biggest stars feature in a ten-minute cameo and that be all.
If for some strange reason you thought that the original Dune cast wasn’t stacked enough, surely your needs have been met with the additions of Florence Pugh and Austin Butler who are set to feature in the sequel.
Fresh off from his recent Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Elvis Presley, Butler is set to feature in Dune Part 2 as Feyd-Rauth Harkonnen, the nephew to Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard). With Florence Pugh portraying the role of Princess Irulan. Neither of these characters were seen or referenced to in the first movie.
Big names from the first movie such as Javier Bardem, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgard and of course Paul Atreides himself, Timothee Chalamet are all set to return for the sequel.
Audience members who haven’t seen the original Dune (1984), or read the novel written by Frank Herbert, won’t have too much insight as to what will happen in the second half of the Dune story. And the trailer certainly doesn’t help with this.
Warner Brothers and Villeneuve himself do a brilliant job of playing their cards close to their chest by not revealing too much about the second half of the plot.
Despite not revealing too much story-wise, the trailer does achieve in revealing a number of interesting insights and looks into the world of Arrakis, as well as the compelling relationship between Paul Atreides (Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya).
The movie isn’t set for initial release until November this year, so we can expect to see more content released up until this point that may reveal more of an insight.
But for now all we have is a small insight of what brilliance Villeneuve has hopefully once again brought to the table.
