Best Actor: Is it a Three-Horse Race?

Updated: Feb 15, 2023

Before the Oscar nominations were announced on January 24th, there was a big question looming over who would be the lucky 5 to earn a pick for Best Actor in a Leading Role. And now that this question has been answered, our heads now turn to: Who will win the award?

The Best Actor in a Leading Role Oscar is one of the most highly respected categories of the ceremony, in the past it has either been used to celebrate the amazing career of one of the actors nominated, or introduce a star to the big stage that is Hollywood.

The nominees for this years Best Actor category are Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Bill Nighy (Living), Austin Butler (Elvis) and Paul Mescal (Aftersun).

It is a very rare occasion that all 5 actors within the category are first time nominees, but this time around, that is certainly the case.

Although there is no clear frontrunner in terms of who will win the award, recent critics awards and reviews reveal that the competition is a clear three-horse race. Farrell, Fraser and Butler each have a strong fight in this competition and plenty to argue for themselves.

Farrell is picking up his first nomination despite an excellent portfolio of work and an excellent career in Hollywood over the years, and could very well be rewarded with his first win. After all, his film is the second most nominated film at the awards ceremony.

Fraser returns to Hollywood through the form of "The Whale", a performance in which he has received brilliant reviews for and a number of accolades in the process. Fraser portrays Charlie a.k.a the Whale, a morbidly obese man who struggles with anxiety and depression in the process.

And finally, Austin Butler. Butler does an amazing job portraying the icon that is Elvis Presley, in the musical biopic directed by Baz Luhrmann, "Elvis". The young actor recently received the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama for his work in the film, and has received nothing but positive reviews for his portrayal of the King of Rock n' Roll.

All three of these performances put up a strong fight in the race to the Best Actor Oscar, and in terms of who will win the award will be completely up in the air until we hear the announcement made live on March 13th.

Who do you think will win the award?
