Avatar Sequels Release Date Pushed Back Even Further
Earlier this month it was announced that audiences will have to wait even longer than originally anticipated for the next three instalments in the Avatar franchise.
The three movies, set to follow the events of 2009’s Avatar and 2022’s Avatar: The Way Of Water, were initially planned to be released from 2024 onwards. But due to Disney’s recent shuffle in schedule, we won’t see what’s next for the Navi until December 2025.
Following the success of James Cameron’s Avatar back in 2009, the franchise was then confirmed to receive a further four sequels. We are now two fifths into the Avatar storyline and audiences are still as gripped as they were 14 years ago.
Cameron himself recently spoke out in an interview and said that he may not even see himself direct the 2 final films of the Avatar story. With the new release date of Avatar 5 set to occur in 2031, the 68-year-old director will be 77 when the movie hits theatres.
Following this news, Avatar would become the first franchise to have 5 films span across the first 4 decades of the century. With the story of Jake Sully and the rest of the Navi taking 22 years to tell.
From a personal perspective, this news is music to my ears because it goes to show that the brilliant minds that are held with the task of telling this story, aren’t in any rush and would much rather serve the story with great purpose, as opposed to releasing all 5 pictures as soon as possible.
Avatar isn’t the only production to receive a delayed release due to Disney’s recent re-shuffle in scheduling. With Marvel’s Avengers: Kang Dynasty, originally set for release in May of 2025, now pushed all the way back to May 2026.
We can expect to see the next three instalments within the Avatar franchise across the following dates:
