2023 has been a great year for filmmakers producing intriguing and original new content within the horror movie genre, and by the looks of things, that doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon.
So far this year horror film fans have been treat to some frightening gems such as Smile, Scream IV, The Boogeyman, M3gan. The list goes on and it is still only August.
And the most recent addition to this list comes through the form of A24's "Talk To Me".
Talk To Me is a brand new, original and exciting addition to the horror stage, that for those in the audience that don't mind a scare every now and then, can't help but enjoy.
One thing that must be mentioned about this film is the fact that it is not for the faint-hearted. There are a number of intense scenes and sequences within this movie that will leave audience members asking: "Did that really just happen?"
So if at the time of reading, you are considering seeing this movie and are cautious as to whether you will be put off by seeing something you don't necessarily want to see, just stay at home.
For those of you who don't mind a dark scene, you're in for a treat.
The story of Talk To Me essentially revolves around a young woman, called Mia, who when fooling around with friends one night, comes into contact with her recently deceased Mother via an embalmed hand that can conjure spirits.
This then opens up a mass chain of events that leave Mia and the remainder of her family in no good position, as the young woman attempts to put an end to the madness that she begins to experience.
As previously mentioned, there are a number of scenes that are not suitable for the faint-hearted, but will be nothing but entertaining to the horror lovers in the audience.
Directors, Danny and Michael Philippou, do everything but hold back in terms of attempting to frighten their audiences. And if this was their true intention, they certainly succeeded.
The two brothers, who make their directorial debut with this film, do an exceptional job of encapsulating audiences within a dark, dark place with this movie.
Horror films of late tend to have deep and meaningful themes hidden behind deep layers of plot at the heart of the storyline, that can sometimes leave audiences questioning what is was they just witnessed.
This film does not do that.
The plot of this movie is easy and simple to follow, it isn't trying to be anything that it isn't. And although there are strong themes touched upon within the storyline, they aren't difficult to spot, enhancing the overall viewing experience.
Australian actress, Sophie Wilde, does a solid job as the leading lady in this film. The young actress has a range of challenging scenes and emotions to take on throughout the movie and passes with flying colours each time.
Whilst watching the film closely, it isn't difficult to pick up on a few poor performances scattered throughout the movie. But Wilde isn't an example of this in the slightest.
Whilst the overall plot and storyline for this film is simple and impressive, some of the dialogue written on page and displayed on screen can be found quite cringey and off-putting for the audience.
I personally did find myself cringing in my seat at some of the conversations and relationships that take place in this film. And within a horror, this is the last thing you want to see.
Despite this, Talk To Me is a brilliant new horror that the two brothers behind the director's chairs should be proud of and I'm sure I am not alone in saying that I can't wait to see what they produce next.
